Eryn Travis, PHD
Before stepping into the academic realm, Dr. Eryn Travis carved a remarkable path in the world of public relations and marketing communications, amassing an impressive 20 years of hands-on experience before earning her PhD.
As a professional turned professor, Dr. Travis is not just about theory; she's about practicality, strategy, creativity, critical thinking, and instilling confidence in her students and clients.
Background & Focus
Eryn’s expertise draws from her experiences as a legislative aid on Capitol Hill and as a lobbyist in Washington, DC. During this time, she advised on education policy, healthcare, the arts, and air transportation. Her capabilities in communications extend across a wide spectrum, including crisis communication, news media training, organizational communication, media production, and the art of crafting messages for public relations and news channels.
As a tenured professor at West Chester University’s (WCU) College of Arts and Humanities, Eryn has enhanced the course curriculum by infusing it with her own practices in communications outside academia. She has authored textbooks used globally in Public Speaking and Public Relations and created a new course in Crisis Communications and Management. Her forward-thinking approach has made her an entrusted expert on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at WCU, where she has spoken at conferences and events on the topic. She has integrated AI tools into strategic communication blueprints, developed rules on usage, and has integrated AI into the classroom.
Embracing a nearly altruistic philosophy, Eryn is focused on teaching students’ practical skills to be successful in their careers. This same ideal applies to her work outside of the classroom. She enjoys consulting with and coaching professionals, especially when it comes to settling their nerves about delivering presentations, public speaking, or facing challenges.
Eryn earned her Ph.D., Doctor of Philosophy, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Media and Communications Studies. She obtained her Master of Arts in Communications and Media from West Chester University while working as a graduate assistant and as an adjunct professor at Immaculata University and WCU. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations from the acclaimed Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.
Her contributions to the field of communications include book authorship, published research on media effects, conference speaking and presentations, pro-bono work with non-profits, guest lectures, and through her role as an academic coordinator.
